COOKEVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (1-2) lost, 69-52, at NCAA Division I Tennessee Tech University (3-1) at the Hooper Eblen Center on the TTU campus. The game doesn't count against the Trojans record but does count for the Golden Eagles.
The game is the year's final exhibition for the Trojans and their fifth game in seven days. When the Trojans host the University of Missouri - St. Louis on Saturday, it will be six games in nine days.
This is the first meeting for Trevecca and Tennessee Tech in women's basketball. The Golden Eagles are now 1-0 versus the Trojans. Trevecca remains 0-0 versus TTU.
The Trojans scored first with a pair of free throws from Bayleigh Carmichel. Tech went on a 12-2 run at that point to turn the momentum their way with a 12-4 lead. Trevecca didn't back down and scored closing the gap to four a couple of times during a 7-3 run. When Keeley Carter nailed a three-pointer with 2:05 left in the first quarter, the Trojans trailed 15-11. Tech pushed the lead to 10 (21-11) as the teams finished the first.
The Golden Eagles continued their run to start the second quarter with a three-pointer, pushing the lead to 13. Trevecca scored four straight to cut the deficit to just nine (24-15). Tech eventually pushed the lead to 15 (34-19) with 2:38 remaining in half and looked to be pulling away, but the Trojans cut it to 10 (34-24) with 40 seconds on the clock. Tech led 36-24 at the intermission.
Tech came out of the break looking to salt away the Trojans. The hosts pushed the lead to 18 (44-26), but the Trojans found their legs and cut the lead to 12 (46-34) with 3:27 left in the third. As the quarter closed, the Golden Eagles led by 13 (51-38).
The Eagles pushed the lead to 19 on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter but the Trojans kept cutting into the lead, but could not get the deficit below 15 through the fourth.
Keeley Carter led the Trojans with 18 points and added nine rebounds, two blocks, and three steals. Carter hit eight of 16 from the field. Emma Palmer hit double figures for the second night in a row, adding 10 after scoring 19 last night against Alabama Huntsville. Palmer added seven rebounds and three blocks.
The Trojans outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 38-36. Trevecca had 19 offensive rebounds and turned that into a 16-9 edge in second-chance scoring for TNU. Tech limited Trevecca to just 2-15 from three-point range while knocking down 9-of-17. TTU won the turnover battle 13-17 and used that for a 23-10 edge in points scored off of a turnover. Trevecca won the points in the paint fight 34-28.
The Trojans return home Saturday at 1 PM when they host the University of Missouri St. Louis (0-2) in Trojan Fieldhouse. It will be the sixth game in nine days for the Trojans while UMSL will be playing for the first time in a week. Trevecca has played UMSL four times in the NCAA Div. II Era with the Tritons leading the series 3-1. Trevecca won the first meeting in 2013 but has lost three in a row since. The last meeting came in St. Louis, a 65-55 win on Nov. 21 of 2021. Keeley Carter led TNU with 15 points.
