HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (2-0) began the Emily Moore era with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19) win over University of Montevallo (0-2) and a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16) win over Lees-McRae College (0-2) on day one of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Invitational on Friday in Spragins Hall.
Trevecca leads Montevallo 1-0 all-time having never met before today. Trevecca takes a 2-0 advantage over Lees-McRae all-time, last meeting during the 2013 season.
GAME ONE: Trevecca 3, Montevallo 1
After capturing the game's first point Montevallo led for most of the opening set … Trevecca's 4-2 lead was the largest it would hold … UM took the first set 25-22 … in the second set, Montevallo jumped out to an early advantage of 6-2 before a 4-1 run brought the Trojans within a point … the second set was tied four times before the Trojans claimed the lead for good off a service ace by Claire Hindman (SO/Westfield, IN) (14-13) … TNU took the second set 25-21 … though a Montevallo rally forced a close end to the third set, Trevecca led by five on several occasions … TNU took the third set 25-23 … both teams traded leads early in the fourth set … Trevecca distanced itself in the fourth and final set with a 6-0 run from (16-14 to 21-14) … TNU took the fourth set 25-19 and won the match, 3-1.
GAME TWO: Trevecca 3, Lees-McRae 1
Trevecca jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead which then became a 6-1 advantage before Lees-McRae rallied to tie the match at 13-13 … the Trojans closed the opening set on a 6-0 run to win 25-18 … the second set remained tight the entire way, neither team by more than four points … with the set tied at 22-22, Lees-McRae pulled away 25-23 to win their only set of the match … much like set one, the Trojans produced a big lead which proved insurmountable for the Bobcats … TNU's 6-0 lead became 11-3 and later 21-10 … Mary Holmberg (SR/San Marcos, CA) closed out the night with a kill to give the Trojans a 25-14 set win.
Ellie Buffler (FR/Nashville, TN) led the day with 26 total kills and 27 digs. The outside hitter produced a .212 hitting percentage (12 K, 5 E, 33 TA), improving to a .294 mark (14 K, 4 E, 34 TA) in the second match.
The Trojans hit .215 (48 K, 20 E, 130 TA) in game one and improved to hitting .289 (49 K, 14 E, 121 TA) in the game.
The Trojans conclude the UAH Invitational with two matches tomorrow against West Georgia (0-1) at 1 PM and then against the hosts, Alabama-Huntsville (1-0) at 7 PM.
Trevecca defeated West Georgia in the team's only other ever meeting in 2017. Trevecca has met UAH at least once in each of the past five years, trailing 1-6 all-time and falling in five sets in Trojan Fieldhouse last season.
